Remains of Greasley Castle Nicholas de Cantelupe, Lord of Ilkeston in Derbyshire and Lord of Greasley in Nottinghamshire, was a man of great wealth, a fearless warrior and a friend and confidential of Edward III. He was knighted in 1326 and in 1340 he obtained the King's permission to fortify his manor house adjoining Greasley church, which then became Greasley Castle. He was a deeply religious man, who gave generously to the church and also founded Beauvale Priory. Greasley Castle Farm (on the right) now stands on the site. Remains of the old castle wall have been incorporated into farm outbuilding walls and traces of the moat and ramparts are still evident, as here just inside the hedge.
