Designation: Monument zone castle ruin Spangenberg Location: In Elmstein Valley south of Erfenstein (high above the Speyerbach, on the northern slope of the Schlossberg on an overhanging rock face). Place: Lachen-Speyerdorf, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Rhineland-Palatinate Construction time: First mention 1317 Description: Vassal castle of the Bishopric of Speyer, 1470 destroyed, new pawning 1480 and reconstruction. Decline since the destruction in the 17th century, 1926/27 measures at the upper castle, since 1972/73 gradual expansion of the terraced complex. Parts of the upper castle has been preserved, little remains of the middle castle and lower castle with older tower and younger gatehouse.
